A families visit to a volcanic field Tuesday turned into a tragedy.
Massimiliano Carrer, 45, his wife, Tiziana Zampella, 42, and their child, Lorenzo, 11, were killed after being boiled alive in hot mud.According to police, the 11-year-old boy entered an off-limits area at the Solfatara Crater in Pozzuoli and slipped. The boy’s father followed to rescue him and died by falling into a pit of boiling-hot mud, the Campania Civil Protection Department said. The mother was also sucked in trying to rescue their son as well, ANSA reported.
The couple also have a 7-year-old, who managed to make his way to safety and survived.
The familes bodies were retrieved a shortly after and placed in body bags before being taken away by ambulance.
The Daily News gathered that “Volcanologist Giuseppe Mastrolorenzo suggested that intense rainfall in recent days could have played a role in the deaths by causing deep openings in the volcanic field’s surface.”
