Tyler Perry Brings ‘A Jazzman’s Blues’ To Netflix After Waiting 27 Years

27 years in the making and Tyler Perry is finally bringing his highly-anticipated latest film to the big screen as the 53-year-old writes, directs, and produces the new Netflix flick, “A Jazzman’s Blues.”

Hollywood Unlocked was on the carpet for the premiere where we talked with Tyler about this latest motion picture, which tells the story of what an interracial couple goes through and the challenges that are set against them.

This film holds a special place with Perry, who began writing the script back in 1995 after meeting and watching a play by the late playwright August Wilson. Perry says that Wilson, whose influence helped inspire the film, told him to write whatever he wanted to write.

The development of this script also came at a time when Perry was at his lowest, knowing that this couldn’t be the first movie to start his career. He began with plays starting with his most popular character Madea, which would propel him to land the opportunity of creating the largest black-owned production company, Tyler Perry Studios, which is based in Atlanta.

While the story of “A Jazzman’s Blues” may have been relevant for the ’90s it’s even more relevant now as lawmakers try to wipe black history away, and questions about interracial marriage and slavery are being brought back up.

“A Jazzman’s Blues” is now streaming on Netflix.
