71 Arrested In Human Trafficking Sting Ahead Of Super Bowl 55 In Tampa
At least 71 people have been arrested in a human trafficking sting ahead of next month’s Super Bowl 55 game in Tampa, Florida. The sting has been dubbed “Operation Interception,” which ran from December 7 to January 9 and was created to reduce demand for prostitutio ahead of Super Bowl LV, slated for February 7.
On Monday (Jan. 11), Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister detailed during a press conference that undercover detectives posted advertisements online and disguised female detectives as prostitutes to lure in 71 men who agreed to pay for sex. Among the men, aged between 20 and 62, were active military members, a Christian schoolteacher, a banker, construction workers, and two registered sex offenders. Also arrested was Hillsborough County’s own firefighter Ronnie Johnson III, 28.

Chronister said, “All of these men have one thing in common: they did not care if the women they were going to have sex with were being exploited, forced to sell their bodies against their will.” He adds, “We know from past experience with major sporting events there will be some who travel for the exclusive purpose of taking advantage of women and children. Our goal is to intercept those involved in sexual exploitation before they’re able to take advantage of the vulnerable individuals in our community and ultimately, hopefully, deter others.”
