A new Wall Street Journal post reveals that cheap and easy access to sex is making male millennials give up on marriage.
According to reports, men are in less of a rush to ‘put a ring on it’ due to variety and cheap access to sex. In other words, the study suggests that women have ‘less standards’ leaving less of an incentive for men to fully commit to one person.
The article also concedes that more women are financially independent and making just as much if not more than men in the workplace leaving less of desire to seek out a partner for marriage.
Marriage among Americans ages 25-34 has dropped by 13 percent from 2000 to 2014.
The study, concluded by sociologist Mark Regnerus refers to past generations where women required marriage before sleeping with a man. Now, women are not requiring such a commitment before sex.
“Sex has become free and easy. This is today’s version of the opiate of the (male) masses.”
Furthermore, Regnerus included in his argument that while women are the gatekeepers of access to sex, men control the marriage market. He surveyed 15,000 people and found that among unmarried respondents under 40, “for every 82 men who wished to be married, 100 women said the same.”
More men and women are opting for ‘self-love’. A 1992 study found that 29 percent of men (and 9 percent of women) masturbated at least once a week.
“In the domain of sex and relationships, men will act as nobly as women collectively demand,” he writes. “This is an aggravating statement for women to read, no doubt. They do not want to be responsible for ‘raising’ men. But it is realistic.”
