The popular tourist town has reportedly become filled with drug gangs and has seen a drastic spike in violence. In just 36 hours, 14 murders were reported — the highest ever in the country’s recorded history, according to Noticaribe.
14 people killed and at least five others were left with gunshot wounds on April 4. The new figures surpassed Cancun’s previous record of nine killings in one day on Nov. 25, 2004. But murders have increased in 2018, with over 100 people having been murdered in the popular tourist destination since the start of the New Year.
Mexican cartels continue to run the city with most of the murders remaining unsolved. British journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy recently traveled to Mexico for SBS’s Dateline to look into why so many murders have surged.
“This is one of the most beautiful views in the world and we are the only people here,” Guru-Murthy said from Cancun’s main beach. However, a few hours later, the reporter was in the middle of a crime scene after a man was gunned down in the sand.
Many are surprised by the gang activity taking place in the tourist town that was once considered one of the more safer areas of the country.
“It’s as if the police don’t want anyone to notice. There’s minimum fuss and hardly any officers here,” Guru-Murthy said.
