Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, and Sylvester Stallone return for a follow-up to 2015’s “Creed.” While it’s hard to beat its predecessor, Creed II still gives you the knockout you were expecting.

This time around, Adonis is the light-heavyweight champion of the world, in a happy relationship with his pregnant soon-to-be fiancé Bianca, while still living and working out with Rocky Balboa. His world is then turned upside down when Rocky’s former nemesis Ivan Drago and the man who killed Apollo in the ring, is training his son Viktor to take on Creed. Adonis can’t help but risk his title and possibly his life to fight the seed of the man responsible for his father’s death.

Creed II gives you the old Rocky movie vibe, with tensions at an all-time high as to whether Adonis is capable of defeating Drago, who is almost double his size! The latest installment serves as a gripping continuation of the Rocky franchise, delving deeper into the personal and professional struggles of its characters while delivering exhilarating boxing action that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

Directed by Steven Caple Jr., the film picks up where its predecessor left off, with Adonis Creed (played by Michael B. Jordan) rising in the boxing world under the guidance of his mentor and former champion, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). What sets “Creed 2” apart is its focus on character development. Michael B. Jordan delivers a powerful performance as Adonis Creed, portraying the internal struggles of a fighter grappling with his family legacy and the desire to forge his own path. Sylvester Stallone once again shines as Rocky Balboa, bringing depth and heart to the role of the aging mentor who must confront his own demons from the past.

The film’s emotional resonance is heightened by the dynamic between Adonis and Bianca (Tessa Thompson), whose relationship faces its own challenges as they navigate the pressures of fame and the demands of the boxing world. Tessa Thompson delivers a standout performance, imbuing Bianca with strength, vulnerability, and unwavering support for her partner.

Of course, “Creed 2” wouldn’t be complete without its electrifying boxing sequences, which are expertly choreographed and shot with intensity and realism. The climactic showdown between Adonis and Viktor Drago is a thrilling spectacle that showcases the physical and emotional stakes of the bout.

Ironically, we also end up feeling empathetic towards the Drago’s who have seemingly lost everything and are really fighting for a place to belong. Similarly, we see a stark vulnerability in Rocky and Creed’s characters that will be elevated towards the end of the film.

While “Creed 2” follows a somewhat predictable trajectory for a sports drama, it compensates with its heartfelt storytelling, strong performances, and pulse-pounding action. Fans of the Rocky franchise will find much to love in this powerful sequel that honors its predecessors while carving out its own identity.

All in all, Creed is one to watch! It packs an emotional punch and cements its place as a worthy addition to the Rocky saga. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the franchise or a newcomer to the world of Adonis Creed, this film is sure to leave you cheering for more. It will hit Theatres this week, so be sure to get your boxing gloves out!
