Reportedly, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast has charmed its numbers in the box office, as the film had an overwhelming opening weekend, totaling a gross $170 million in North America and $350 million globally. The film established a number of new box-office records in the process.
The $160 million film stars well-known British actress Emma Watson of Harry Potter, as Belle, and co-star Dan Stevens plays the Beast. The cast also includes others actors, including Luke Evans, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson.
Producer of Beauty and the Beast, David Hoberman, expressed,
“This is such a beloved property. And in such a time of uncertainty in this country, and all over the world, I think this movie gives people a sense of joy and comfort.”
Moreover, the previous record-holder in North America was Pixar/Disney’s Finding Dory, which set numbers at $135 million in Summer 2016. Beauty also scored the top opening of all time for a PG film internationally, led by with China bringing in $44.8 million, and the U.K., Watson’s home country, earning $22.8 million.
Beauty and the Beast even beat out the final Harry Potter movie, that came in at $169.2 million, and ranked No. 7 on the top 10 list of biggest bows in North America, a massive accomplishment.
The film is also Watson’s biggest opener to this day.
