The outrageous California fires burning in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, forced Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi to evacuate their new beachside home Sunday, and Rob Lowe to leave his home in Montecito.
The Montecito homes of Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bridges, Drew Barrymore and Patrick Stewart were also in the fire’s path.
Winfrey tweeted her prayers for the community on Sunday.
This unincorporated community of Montecito is known as a haven for celebrities and their luxury homes.
Just south of Montecito is the beach town of Carpinteria, where six structures burned Sunday, the Los Angeles Times reported.
DeGeneres tweeted Sunday morning that she and wife De Rossi just evacuated their pets from their recently purchased beach house in Carpinteria, for which they paid $18.6 million back in October. It is not clear what time DeGeneres herself was ordered to leave or had already left. However, Robert Lowe had left his home late Sunday afternoon.
The Thomas fire, one of several wildfires currently burning in Southern California, has already consumed around 230,000 acres in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Over 800 houses have already been destroyed.
Most school districts in Santa Barbara County canceled Monday’s classes, according to the Los Angeles Times. Apparently several of these districts will be closed until after the New Year. UC Santa Barbara Chancellor Henry T. Yang also announced that the university has postponed final exams until next year.
