Since the news broke out that Jasmine Shepard, a proven academic black student, had to share her Valedictorian title with a white student without explanation, mixed feelings have spread across the Internet.
Now, the recent High School graduate is dealing with the aftermath of it all by having to respond to vile and racist comments from users on her ‘Justice For Jasmine’ Facebook page.
One user decided to go on Jasmine’s page and call her ‘entitled’ and a ‘n***r’ for fighting for unfair treatment.
“You n*****s and your self entitled actions make me sick,” wrote Jacob Francis. “You shouldn’t even be at the same school as white people!”
Another user, by the name of David St Clair, wrote:
“You’re simply butthurt that another student is white and you feel like you deserve special attention simply based on the color of your skin.”
User Eric Rowe added:
“Stop playing the ‘I’M BLACK SO I’M SPECIAL’ card and put on your grown-up pants.”
Jasmine responded in the most mature and profound way, and didn’t allow the racist haters get her down.
“Throughout my life, my parents shielded me from (such) behavior…, but now I see that I will have to face this head on,” she wrote. “You can send me these types of messages but those sentiments will not be returned.”
According to reports, Cleveland High School, in Mississippi, never had two students share the valedictorian title, nor have they had a black valedictorian in the 110 years since the school’s inception.
Cleveland High School is the last High School in the Cleveland district to comply with desegregated laws.
