Ex Rams running back Lawrence Phillips was found dead in his prison cell earlier this morning. Officials came to the conclusion that the 40 year old former NFL player took his own life.
Phillips was facing a possible death penalty for the alleged murder of his former cellmate at Kern Valley State Prison. The murder occurred on April 11,2015 when Damion Soward was found dead by strangulation. Phillips jail sentence entailed a 31 year sentence due to domestic violence, false imprisonment, and grand theft auto.
His football career ended in 1999 and since then, Phillips had found himself on the wrong side of the tracks. A month before his death, he wrote this letter to his mother. It’s quoted:
I feel myself very close to snapping. My anger grows daily as I become fed up with prison. I feel my anger is near bursting and that will result in my death or the death of someone else’s.
