Straight Outta Compton and the major press (and shout outs) it’s been receiving has made it hard not to reflect on the contribution N.W.A. made to music as a whole, and for good reason. With a present day filled with much of the same violence and never ending mourning (#BlackLivesMatter, btw) Rolling Stone writer Brian Hiatt sat down with Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, M.C. Ren and DJ Yella to talk the creation, the rise, and the need to remember N.W.A.
“You had to see why we did the music. You know, not just ‘we were young, angry niggas out of South Central,’ but why did we make those kind of records? We were living in the middle of dope dealing, gangbanging, police brutality, fucking Reaganomics, and there was nowhere to escape.” – Ice Cube
This special issue of Rolling Stone will hit newsstands on Friday, the same day as the film. Read more excerpts on Cube’s take on misogyny and Dre’s social anxiety, here.
