John Conyers’ Son Was Arrested This Year, Accused of Stabbing His Girlfriend
John Conyers III, Detroit hedge fund manager named as a possible successor to his father, Rep. John Conyers Jr., was arrested in Los Angeles this year on suspicion of domestic violence, but prosecutors declined to charge him, according to documents obtained by TMZ.
The gossip site reports that Conyers was arrested back on Feb. 15. Law enforcement sources said that John accused her of cheating after going through her computer at around 2 AM. The argument allegedly escalated and things turned physical. The woman said he slammed her on her bed and on the floor, pinned her down and also spat on her.
If that sounded like a lot, there’s more. The woman who hasn’t been named also claimed John chased her into her kitchen where she grabbed a 10-inch knife to protect herself and also hoping that it would make him leave. Apparently, that didn’t work. She then said that he grabbed the knife and swung at her twice, stabbing her, cutting her right bicep which required a few stitches. He then chased her back into the bedroom and hit her even more.
They both called 911. When cops came John told them that she pulled a knife on him and grabbed it from her to protect himself and that’s when he accidentally stabbed her.
Still, that wasn’t enough for cops to believe that she was in the wrong. Cops looked at the woman’s injuries and decided it was best to arrest John for felony domestic violence. She was taken to the hospital.
L.A. County D.A. declined to prosecute John because there were no witnesses. Also because prosecutors were unable to prove a reasonable doubt the stabbing wasn’t an accident.
On Tuesday, Conyers’ father, a Democrat who represented the Detroit area in Congress for 52 years, announced his resignation after a number of allegations of sexual misconduct came to light. He said he hoped his son would take over for him.
However, John Conyers III said Wednesday that he was not sure he wanted to run because he did not want to deal with “public life,” which comes with “unnecessary grief.”
“I didn’t ask my dad to say that I was going to run because I don’t know if I am going to run,” Mr. Conyers said. “I was extremely caught off guard by his endorsement. This is what he wants. Who am I to tell him what he wants?”
