McKayla Maroney Demands Justice Against Ex-Team USA Doctor: ‘Larry Nassar Deserves Life In prison’

On Thursday, a statement from Olympic gold-medal-winning gymnast McKayla Maroney was read during the four-day sentencing hearing of former USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar for sexual abuse against multiple minors.

Maroney was not in court to personally backup her claims that Nassar began sexually abusing her when she was 13. However, Michigan state Assistant Attorney General Angela Povilaitis read the gymnast’s victim impact statement as a photo of Maroney at the 2012 Summer Olympics hung behind her.

The 21-Year-old gymnast wrote about starting gymnastics, entering her first competition when she was 7. She said making the U.S. National Team at the age 14 was “remarkable and amazing,” but that it came with a major price.

“I was told to trust Nassar, that he would treat my injuries and make it possible for me to achieve my Olympic dreams,” the statement said. “Dr. Nassar told me that I was receiving ‘medically necessary treatment that he had been performing on patients for over 30 years.’ As it turns out, much to my demise, Dr. Nassar was not a doctor, he in fact is, was, and forever shall be, a child molester, a monster of a human being. End of story.”

Not only was she abused by the ex doctor at 14 but she shared that it continued throughout her entire career.

“It seemed whenever and wherever this man could find the chance, I was ‘treated,’” she said in the statement. “It happened in London before my team and I won the gold medal, and it happened before I won my Silver Medal.”

Maroney is now among more than 120 women who have accused the 54-year-old serial sexual abuser of assault. Her fellow Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas have also come forward with their own testimonies of abuse.

“Larry Nassar deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison, not only because of what he did to me, my teammates and so many other little girls,” Maroney said. “He needs to be behind bars so he will never prey upon another child.”
