Minnesota Doctor Fined $4K For Providing Prince With Painkillers

Dr. Michael Schulenberg, the doctor who was treating Prince by prescribing pain medication for the pop star in another person’s name, has finally been reprimanded. According to The Daily News, Schulenberg was recently disciplined by a state medical board with a civil penalty of $4,648 for prescribing pain medication to the artist before his death in 2016.

Schulenberg initially told the board he didn’t know painkillers he prescribed for Prince’s bodyguard Kirk Johnson were intended for Prince. But his story changed last August when he met with board authorities and discussed one clinic visit.

As we previously reported, Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, died of an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Minnesota home on April 21, 2016. Authorities ruled it accidental as it was unlikely Prince knew he was taking the synthetic opioid. AJC reports that no charges were filed because it was unclear if Prince took the opioid painkillers prescribed by Schulenberg. His overdose death was linked to other counterfeit pills that looked like common painkillers but actually contained fentanyl, a far more potent and dangerous synthetic opioid.

AP reported last month that a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Prince’s family members has been quietly dismissed in recent months. Johnson was deposed during the wrongful death litigation, but refused to answer nearly all of the questions, according to a transcript.
