Ebony Magazine is using its September 2015 Fashion issue to take a stand! The cover features six rising black models that show just how beautiful and diverse black skin really is! The models on the cover include Winnie Harlow, Milan Dixon, Fatima Siad, Marquita Pring, Diandra Forrest, and Samantha Archibald, and they all look absolutely amazing. Whats so special about the cover is that it highlights the misconception of the mainstream media’s idea of black beauty. The article entitled ‘Race and The Runway’ reveals that out of the 9,538 model bookings that took place during the Fall 2015 Runway shows, only 8 percent were comprised of black models. The issue sits down with three runway icons Pat Cleveland, Beverly Johnson, and Tyra Banks who all shed light on the issues of race and color in the model world.
Former elite fashion model Gail O’Neill gave her opinion as well “When I started in 1985, the industry was far more integrated. I feel sorry for the Black girls working today. So many times there is just one brown face, maybe two, in the couture shows…I can’t even count how many brown girls I would see every time the collections came around.”
Ebony EIC gave a special press release about the issue- “Thank you Black models of then and now—so present and despite what seems like fewer of you working today—so there. We see you injecting brown bodies into spaces where we have all but been erased.”
Okay Ebony Mag!!
