An ER nurse at the Magnolia Regional Medical Center in Arkansas alerted authorities when a couple brought in their newborn baby covered in rat bite marks.
The couple rushed their newborn in for treatment after they found her in her bassinet covered in blood. When doctors examined the baby, they discovered over 100 rat bites that covered the baby’s arms, fingers, hands, and face. The marks were consistent with rodent bites. The wound on the baby’s forehead was one-inch wide, so deep that it exposed the baby’s skull.
Once authorities arrived to the hospital, they began to question parents, 19-year-old Erica Shryock and 18-year-old Charles Elliott. According to police, Shryock told police the baby sleeps in a bassinet next to her bed. She goes on to say that the baby went to sleep around 5:30 am and woke up screaming about two hours later. Shryock noted that the baby was covered in blood when she checked on her.
When authorities questioned Elliot, he gave the same story, although he said he noticed the rat footprints in the crib.
Authorities went to the home to investigate. They found the bassinet with bloody rat footprints, a baby’s hat soaked in blood, a baby blanket with blood on it, and rodent droppings on the bedside table.
The newborn underwent facial reconstruction.
Both Shryock and Elliott were charged with endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree.
