If you loved the swimsuit section of the Miss America pageant, say goodbye to it as they are making room for something much better.
On Tuesday, Gretchen Carlson, chairwoman of the Miss America board of directors, announced that the event will no longer feature a swimsuit portion.
This is major as the pageant has been around for 97 years and the swim section has always been a top fan favorite.
While it may seem sad, the reason why is super awesome.
Carlson said that it will no longer be considered a pageant, but a competition.
“We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. That’s huge,” she said during her appearance on Good Morning America.
Carlson also said the new Miss America competition will be more inclusive to women of “all shapes and sizes.”
But that’s still not all, the evening gown portion is also changing!
Carlson said that the contestants will now be able to choose “whatever they want.”
During that evening gown and question portion, contestants will be asked about how they would advance their social-impact initiatives during this part of the contest.
This will help in the rise of the #MeToo movement, Carlson said.
“We’re experiencing a cultural revolution in our country with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard on many issues,”she said in the statement.
“Miss America is proud to evolve as an organization and join this empowerment movement.”
We’re very excited to see these new changes come about! Take a look at past competitions below and let us know what you think!
