If you couldn’t tell by virtually everyone hitting that #StraightOuttaCompton hashtag in movie theaters this weekend, the N.W.A biopic is officially a smash hit, topping the the box office in its opening weekend and ringing registers in at an estimated $56.1 million. The critically acclaimed fan favorite nearly doubled Universal’s $29M production budget and should rake in plenty more by the end of August.
The film bested the studio’s predicted gross of $30M and set a record for an R-rated film released in the month of August. Given that all of this hype has come with a leading cast of relatively unknown actors, one should take notice. I’m pretty, though, the big names behind the SOC push and a nice new album from Dr. Dre certainly contributed significantly to the seats filling in theaters. It all paid off in the end, obviously, and now the Internet is wondering which hip-hop star will be the subject of the next inevitable biopic. Perhaps that Tupac biopic can finally get underway?
Congratulations to director F. Gary Gray, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and all involved with the Straight Outta Compton release. I can definitely say it was the most engaging film I’ve seen in a while.
