Two LA Firefighters To Be Fired For Taking Kobe Bryant Helicopter Crash Photos

Several first responders are going to be held accountable for taking and distributing pictures from the horrific crash site where Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others died.

RELATED: Vanessa Bryant Opens Up About Pushing Through ‘Unimaginable’ Pain After Kobe And Daughter Gianna’s Deaths

So far, two firefighters are set to be fired for their actions. In the docs, obtained by TMZ, Vanessa Bryant’s legal team says they received paperwork from the fire department’s own internal investigation and found that they’d sent 2 firefighters “intention to discharge” letters because they’d taken pics at the scene. It was noted that one of the firefighters, according to the docs, was just a safety officer there to secure the scene that day, but took graphic shots of the victims’ remains. As TMZ reports, both firefighters apparently shared the pics with an L.A. County Fire media relations officer, who then proceeded to send it around to other firefighters.

Vanessa’s attorneys filed legal docs about scheduling the trial in her invasion of privacy lawsuit against L.A. County and, in the process, revealed the L.A. County Fire Department was involved in the photo-taking and sharing. This adds to the already-long list of County officials — including at least 8 Sheriff’s deputies who allegedly took photos of victims’ bodies.

As we previously reported, Vanessa is suing for negligence, invasion of privacy and a 14th Amendment violation. The trial now appears to have been rescheduled to April 27, 2022, the New York Post notes.

Kyrie Irving Wants The NBA To Honor Kobe Bryant With New Logo — Vanessa Bryant Is On Board

Just like many sports fans around the world, Kyrie Irving believes it’s time for a big change. The basketball superstar took to Instagram on Wednesday suggesting the league alter its logo to honor Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

RELATED: Meek Mill Says He Apologized To Vanessa Bryant In Private Over “Insensitive” Kobe Bryant Lyric

While sharing a graphic of what he thinks the new logo should look like, the athlete explained, that it has “Gotta Happen, idc what anyone says. BLACK KINGS BUILT THE LEAGUE.” Bryant’s widow, Vanessa Bryant, appeared to be on board with the idea as she reposted Irving’s picture of the logo, saying “love this. @KyrieIring.” His followers also seemed to be here for it too as Irving’s post alone garnered more than 1 million likes and close to 21,000 replies as of 2:15 a.m. ET Thursday.

As many know, the current NBA logo is modeled after Jerry West — the Hall of Fame guard who spent all 14 seasons of his career with the Lakers.

After Bryant died in 2020 following a helicopter crash that also killed his daughter Gianna and 7 others, a petition circulated on change.org to make him the logo and drew over 3.2 million signatures. However, the league has announced no plans to consider a logo change. So far, the NBA has renamed the All-Star Game MVP trophy in Bryant’s honor.

On Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law legislation that makes it illegal for first responders to take unauthorized pictures of people killed at the scene of an accident or crime.

RELATED: UPDATE: Vanessa Bryant Sues The L.A. County Sheriff Over Leaked Photos Of Helicopter Crash Site

As the Associated Press reports, the measure was proposed back in May following the tragic January helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna Bryant and seven other people. After the accident, eight deputies were accused of taking or sharing graphic photos of the scene, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said then, adding that he had ordered the images deleted. At the time, he noted that the department has a policy against taking and sharing crime scene photos, but it did not apply to accident scenes.

Bryant’s widow, Vanessa Bryant, recently sued the department over the photos. AB 2655 now makes it a misdemeanor with fines up to $1,000 per offense for first responders to take and share accident and crime scene photos for any purpose other than an official law enforcement purpose or a genuine public interest. The measure that will take effect Jan. 1.

CBS LOS ANGELES reports that Assemblyman Mike Gipson, D-Carson, was the one who pushed for the legislation following reports that several deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department shared graphic photos of the helicopter crash. He wrote on Twitter:

“Proud to report that my bill, The ‪#KobeBryant‬ Act of 2020, was signed today by ‪@GavinNewsom‬. ‪#AB2655‬ will prohibit first responders from taking photos of the deceased outside of job duties. ‪#caleg.”‬

As we previously reported, Kobe lost his life following a helicopter crash in California last month. His 13-year-old daughter Gianna was also on the helicopter along with seven others. While the fashion show featured Kobe Bryant-inspired jerseys with his Lakers’ number on it, folks couldn’t get pass the gold helicopters. One fan tweeted, “Philipp Plein made two gold helicopters for his show today, which falls 27 days after Kobe died in a helicopter crash,” one person tweeted. “BUT DONT WORRY he whipped up a bunch of Swarovski Kobe jerseys (with “Plein” written on them??) so it’s cool. F—k you, Philipp.” Another said, “Distasteful, tacky & material waste.”

Apparently, Plein has provided a statement to Page Six, explaining why he had those props displayed:

“The catwalk setup was already planned and designed in November 2019, way before this tragic accident occurred,” he wrote. “This is the reason why they [sic] were gilded helicopters on the runway. I would have clearly removed them if possible, but it was too late to replace them.”

He went on to say,

”This tragedy affected myself and all the world deeply and I feel that my fashion show have [sic] been the best moment to express my respect and admiration for Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and his family,” the statement continued. “It is sad to see how something positive and constructive can be misinterpreted by people who obviously want to interpret negatively without even having a reason. As a matter of fact, I am really doing something to help and to support the foundation. Actions speak louder than words.”

Aside from this, Plein did share that the proceeds from the Kobe collection will be donated to his Mama and Mambacita Sports Foundation.

Vanessa Bryant Reportedly Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Helicopter Company

According to TMZ, the complaint in Los Angeles County Superior Court against Island Express Helicopters and Island Express Holding Corp. alleges that pilot Ara Zobayan, who also died in the crash, failed “to use ordinary care in piloting the subject aircraft” and was “negligent.”

“Defendant Island Express Helicopters’ breach of its duty and negligence caused the injuries and damages complained of herein and Plaintiffs’ deceased, Kobe Bryant, was killed as a direct result of the negligent conduct of Zobayan for which Defendant Island Express Helicopters is vicariously liable in all respects,” the lawsuit said.

Not only does the suit state that the pilot failed to properly monitor and assess the weather prior to takeoff, failed to obtain proper weather data prior to the flight, failed to abort the flight when he knew of the cloudy condition, failed to maintain control of the helicopter, but it also says that Island Express engaged in unnecessary and needlessly risky means of transportation under the circumstances, TMZ reports.

In addition to that, the lawsuit also says the pilot, Ara George Zobayan, was disciplined in 2015 for violating the visual flight rule minimums by flying into airspace of reduced visibility.

The amount she’s suing for hasn’t been shared. However, Vanessa is asking for punitive damages, claiming the pilot and Island Express were reckless, and the damages could be untold millions.

The event is expected to be incredibly moving and emotional as thousands will be looking back on a bunch of special moments of Kobe as they mourn and pay their respect to the late NBA legend. It’s going to be a pretty big turnout as more than 88,000 applied for tickets just in the first 5 hours they became available. TMZ notes that the Staples Center has a capacity of around 20,000 people. However, it was said that many of those tickets had already been accounted for with Kobe’s family, friends, and the NBA community.

Law enforcement expects thousands of people who can’t get inside the event to stand outside the Center, where Kobe played for 20 years and became a beloved figure in Los Angeles and around the world. It was noted that ceremony will NOT be broadcast on the screens outside Staples so they’re urging fans without tickets to stay home and watch the broadcast on TV or online. As of right now, it is unclear who will be speaking or perform at the memorial.

As we previously reported, Kobe and Gianna tragically died with seven others after their helicopter crashed in Los Angeles on Jan. 26.

Vanessa Bryant, who is expected to attend the event, said of the losses just days after the accident,

“We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna — a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri.”

TMZ notes that the memorial stream will begin at 9:30 AM PT.

NBA Renames All-Star Game MVP Award After Kobe Bryant!

NBA Renames All-Star Game MVP Award After Kobe Bryant!

During a press conference in Chicago at All-Star Weekend, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced that the NBA All-Star Game MVP trophy will be renamed after the late Los Angeles Lakers legend, Kobe Bryant. While speaking with the press, Silver said the first All-Star Game Kobe Bryant MVP Award will be presented after the game at the United Center in Chicago, where the league is currently celebrating the lives of Bryant, his daughter Gianna along with seven other people who tragically died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26 in California.

RELATED: Kobe Bryant’s Helicopter Was Only 100 Feet Away From Clear Skies Before Crash

“No one embodied All-Star more than Kobe Bryant,” Silver said in announcing the change. He went on to say, “Kobe Bryant is synonymous with NBA All-Star and embodies the spirit of this global celebration of our game. He always relished the opportunity to compete with the best of the best and perform at the highest level for millions of fans around the world.”

Game
( Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)

As ESPN reported, Bryant was named to the All-Star Game 18 times in his career, including every year from 2000-2016. He won the game’s MVP award in 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2011. The renamed award is expected to make its debut this Sunday following the exhibition between Team LeBron and Team Giannis.

The Saturday press event was the first time Silver has discussed the tragic event and why he decided not to cancel any of that day’s games.

“The immediate issue was whether games were going to be played that night on Sunday night. Through our operation center in Secaucus, New Jersey, we have a live look into every one of our arenas, and we realized that people were already assembling for some of the games that were scheduled. People were already in arenas, and there still had not been confirmation… that Kobe and Gigi had lost their lives.”

He added,

“So it didn’t feel appropriate to us that we should be canceling our events and acknowledging something that was not official yet. We were in touch with the family indirectly, and I think also, certainly in that moment, they were not prepared to acknowledge something that had not clearly happened.”

While some shared the painting across social media in admiration, others quickly criticized the depiction of Bryant and requested its removal over its “ugliness.”

Subsequently, this spawned mixed emotions as some rejoiced and others became outraged at the fact that the expression of art was created in memoriam.

In response to the backlash, local hip-hop artist Antonio Maxie posted to Facebook: “It’s always [people] that can’t do some s**t that’s critiquing others’ work!! STFU!! Kobe Bryant’s Helicopter Was Only 100 Feet Away From Clear Skies Before Crash

RELATED: NTSB Reveals No Engine Failure In Kobe Bryant Crash, Cause STILL Unknown

The world is still in shock and mourning after Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others sadly passed away in a helicopter crash in California.

Following the tragedy, investigators have been working hard to determine what caused the crash, and the NTSB has revealed that Bryant’s chopper was just 12 seconds from clear skies before it hit a hill in Calabasas.

Experienced Pilot Ara Zobayan was just 100 feet away from exiting the heavy fog layer when, instead of increasing the altitude, he turned left turn and crashed into the hillside at 180 mph.

“If you exit the bottom of the clouds at 4,000 feet per minute at that high speed, you’ve certainly lost control of the aircraft,” air safety consultant Kipp Lau said. “Once you break out of the clouds it’s clear. Everything lines up with the body.”

The investigators believe that Ara was trying to quickly move out of the fog with the high speed, however, the final left turn resulted in the fatal outcome.

“When he went into the clouds, he had a full on emergency,” pilot Mike Sagely had said.

The NTSB is still investigating to uncover the definitive cause.

NTSB Reveals No Engine Failure In Kobe Bryant Crash, Cause STILL Unknown

The NTSB has revealed that their initial investigation into the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash showed no signs of engine failure.

The National Transportation Safety Board has released preliminary findings into the tragic crash that killed NBA icon Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven other loved-ones.

RELATED: Nike Pays Honors Kobe Bryant During New York Fashion Week Show

The findings show that the craft did not lose power before the crash and its engines were still working,

“Our investigators have already developed a substantial amount of evidence about the circumstances of this tragic crash,” said NTSB Chairman Robert L. Sumwalt. “And we are confident that we will be able to determine its cause as well as any factors that contributed to it so we can make safety recommendations to prevent accidents like this from occurring again.”

The actual wreckage was 127 feet from where the helicopter impacted and that is where the found the engines.

“Examination of the main and tail rotor assemblies found damage consistent with powered rotation at the time of impact. The initial point of impact consisted of highly fragmented cabin and cockpit debris,” the report said. The main wreckage was about 127 feet from the impact crater.

It will still take several months to determine the cause of the crash. Kobe’s wife shared earlier today that a memorial will be held for those who perished at the Staples Center on February 24th.

Manufacturer Of Kobe Bryant’s Helicopter Urges Customers To Add Warning System

As we previously reported, NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna along with seven others were tragically killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday. At this time, it is still unclear what ultimately caused the helicopter to go down. However, some reports say that heavy fog might have been a contributing factor while other reports state that Kobe’s helicopter did not have certain emergency features.

RELATED: No Black Box Found Inside Kobe Bryant Helicopter Wreckage

While the crash is currently being investigated, it was said that the specific model flying Kobe was the S-76B and, as you know, the NTSB said it wasn’t equipped with a Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS). Apparently, it was an optional feature until 2005 — Kobe’s was built in 1991, TMZ notes.

According to the news site, Sikorsky, the manufacturer of the helicopter that crashed in California is now urging other customers to take the extra steps to add the critical system feature.

As we also previously reported, the NTSB also revealed that Kobe’s helicopter did not have a cockpit voice or flight data recorder which is also known as a ”black box.” The reason being was because they weren’t standard until recently.

Sikorsky says it’s deeply saddened by the Kobe tragedy and is “actively supporting the NTSB investigation,” adding … “Safety is our top priority. If there are any actionable findings from the investigation, we will immediately inform our S-76 customers,” TMZ quotes.

Rick Fox Speaks Out On False Reports That He Died With Kobe Bryant In Fatal Helicopter Crash

As the breaking news of Kobe Bryant’s helicopter crash spread through the internet, conflicting and false reports began to follow. One news outlet claimed that actor and former NBA player Rick Fox had been on board the helicopter that crashed in California Sunday, taking the lives of 9, including Kobe’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna.

RELATED: Update: Kobe Bryant’s Daughter Gianna Also Died In Deadly Helicopter Crash

At that time, we could only imagine what was going through Fox’s family’s mind when hearing the news. But, soon they would receive a sign of relief after close sources confirmed that he was not one of the victims. Fox even tweeted later that Sunday and said,

“Kobe and Gianna may your souls and the souls of the others who were with you Rest In Peace. My condolences and prayers go out to Kobe’s wife Vanessa, his daughters and the Bryant Family. I Love You Kobe and will miss you dearly.”

He’s also now breaking his silence and sharing how that false rumors of him affected his family as he joined Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Derek Fisher, and Kenny Smith for a special segment during Tuesday night’s episode of Inside the NBA on TN. Fox said that someone had told his best friend, King Rice, that he may have been on the helicopter.

“I’m seeing King’s number repeatedly going and going and going, and I think he’s worried about me, so I said, ‘I’m gonna talk to my best friend,’ so I answered and said, ‘Hey man, this is crazy about Kobe,’ and he just was bawling,” he recalled. “And I started crying. And he was like, ‘You’re alive!’ And I was like, ‘Well, yeah. Like what do you mean?’ And it was in that moment that my phone just started going, and my mom and my sister and my brother… This has been a lot to process for all of us.”

He went on to say,

“I’m glad that’s over with, but it was hard to deal with because it shook a lot of people in my life,” Fox, who played for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics during his career in the NBA, said.”

Fox also shared that it was hard for him and his family to take in the news about Kobe and Gianna, even bringing them to tears as they tried to understand what just happened.

As we previously reported, Kobe and Gianna were just two of nine people to die in Sunday’s helicopter crash that included Christina Mauser, John, Keri and Alyssa Altobelli, Sarah and Payton Chester and pilot Ara Zobayan.

The cause of the crash is not immediately clear as of right now.

All nine victims aboard the helicopter that crashed in Calabasas on Sunday have all been identified. As we previously reported, 41-year-old NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were the first confirmed victims of the tragic crash. Among those killed were sports coaches, parents along with teenage peers of Bryant’s basketball star daughter. According to The Daily Mail, the group was reportedly traveling to Bryant’s Mamba Academy for a practice session when the helicopter had gone down.

RELATED: UPDATE: Three More Victims Of Helicopter Crash That Killed Kobe Bryant & Daughter Identified

We noted that John Altobelli, a well-respected baseball coach at Orange Coast College, his wife Keri and their daughter Alyssa and basketball coach Christina Mauser were later confirmed as the other passengers who perished during the incident as well. It was recently reported that Sarah Chester and her teen daughter Payton were also killed when the Sikorsky S-76 flew into the hillside and burst into flames. The report also identified Ara Zobayan, the pilot who also sadly died in the morning incident. TMZ reports that heavy fog is said to be the cause of the tragic incident. However, while the crash is being investigated, loved ones of the victims can only focus on the memories they have left as they try to push forward.

The husband of Christina Mauser, the basketball coach who also worked at the Mamba Academy, said:

“My kids and I are devastated. We lost our beautiful wife and mom today in a helicopter crash.” Sarah Chester and her daughter Payton were tempered as ‘two gorgeous human beings” by Todd Schmidt, the school principal at Harbor View Elementary.

Jared Yochim, a friend of the pilot also shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, writing:

“The pilot flying Kobe and crew today was my friend Ara Zobayan (white shirt and tie). Many of my friends were actually friends with Ara and not just pilot,” The Daily Mail quotes.

Celebrity and sports fans have been pouring in tributes to Kobe and his daughter all over social media. Many have also been sending condolences and prayers to his family.

UPDATE: Three More Victims Of Helicopter Crash That Killed Kobe Bryant & Daughter Identified

The news on today’s tragic incident involving NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna continues to get worse as the latest updates reveal the other victims.

RELATED: Kobe Bryant Dies In California Helicopter Crash

According to TMZ’s latest report, Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, who was chosen as the American Baseball Coaches Association’s national coach of the year in 2019, was also among the victims, along with his wife, Keri, and daughter Alyssa. Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley confirmed that Christina Mauser, a girls’ basketball coach at Harbor Day School, also died in the crash.

“I just learned that our amazing Matt Mauser of TiajuanaDogs lost his wife Christina in the crash. She coached the girl’s team,” Foley tweeted. “This devastating tragedy gets worse by the hour. So much pain for so many local families. Our hearts are broken & grieving for the families impacted.”

While the cause of the crash hasn’t been confirmed just yet, TMZ notes that L.A. weather was extremely foggy Sunday morning. Law enforcement sources say that LAPD air support was even grounded because of it and apparently, flight tracker data shows Kobe’s chopper appeared to first encounter weather issues as it was above the L.A. Zoo. It was said that his helicopter circled that area at least 6 times at a very low altitude; around 875 feet, perhaps waiting for the fog to clear.

As we previously reported, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva refused to name the victims until they had been identified by the coroner and the news was first shared with the victims’ family.

“It would be extremely disrespectful to understand your loved one has perished and you learn about it from TMZ,” he said. “That is just wholly inappropriate so we are not going to be going there. We are going to wait until the coroner does their job.”

Starting with Beyoncé, the Grammys decided to put some respect on her name this year by giving her the Best Music Film award for her Netflix documentary HOMECOMING: A Film by Beyoncé. As many would agree, the award is well deserved as it was the most talked-about project for weeks, as it captures her iconic 2018 Coachella performance.

Making things even more special, the talented entertainer Lizzo snagged two Grammys in the pre-show premiere ceremony. Teenage phenomenon Billie Eilish and country-rap breakout Lil Nas X along with country singer Billy Ray Cyrus won their first Grammy Award as well. But that was all!

The iconic pop star Lady Gaga also got an award for Best Song Written For Visual Media. Late rapper Nipsey Hussle along with Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy won Best Rap Performance For “Racks In The Middle” at the pre ceremony.
