The 23-time Grand Slam champion went into the tournament managing an Achilles problem that she sustained at the US Open and was not been able to recover sufficiently after her 7-6 (7-2) 6-0 first-round victory over Kristie Ahn. The sudden announcement came just an hour before the 39-year-old tennis star was set to head out onto Court Philippe Chatrier to face Tsvetana Pironkova.

She said she tried warming up for the match but knew she wasn’t able to compete. She then spoke to coach Patrick Mouratoglou and, she said, “We kind of both thought about it and we decided it wasn’t the best for me to try and play today.”

“I was able to get it somewhat better but just looking long-term at this tournament — ‘will I be able to get through enough matches?’ — and so for me, I don’t think I could and struggling to walk so that’s kind of a telltale sign that I should try to recover,” she told reporters Wednesday.

As CNN notes, Williams’ withdrawal means her next opportunity to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 majors will be the Australian Open, which will begin in January.

Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Resigns From Board — Urges Company To Replace Him With A Black Candidate

Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Resigns From Board — Urges Company To Replace Him With A Black Candidate

On Friday, Reddit Co-founder Alexis Ohanian announced his resignation from the company’s board. In several tweets shared to his personal Instagram account, Ohanian, who is married to tennis star Serena Williams, said he was stepping down and urging the company to replace him with a black candidate.

”I co-founded @reddit 15 years ago to help people find community and a sense of belonging. It is long overdue to do the right thing. I’m doing this for me, for my family, and for my country,” Ohanian said. In his Twitter thread, he further explained, “I’ve resigned as a member of the Reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate, + I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate, and I’m starting with a pledge of $1M to @kaepernick7’s @yourrightscamp.” He added, “I believe resignation can actually be an act of leadership from people in power right now. To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: do not stop.”

Ohanian also shared a tweet linking to his blog where he went on to explain why he made this decision: “I’m writing this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: ‘What did you do?'” Ohanian wrote.

As CNBC reports, Ohanian co-founded Reddit back in 2005. After selling the company to Conde Nast in 2006, Ohanian and co-founder Steve Huffman returned to the company full time in 2015. In 2018, he stepped back from a day-to-day role while continuing to serve on the board.

His big move comes after protests that have swept the nation in the last week in response to the killing of George Floyd. People on social media have been commending the 37-year-old for his big decision.

The 38-year-old hadn’t won a title since the Australian Open in January 2017, and since becoming a mother to her daughter Olympia. After the game, Williams shared how thrilled she was about wining the title. She said,

“It feels good. It’s been a long time,” Williams said. “I think you can see the relief on my face. I played an incredible opponent today in Jessica and, honestly, it was a great match and I couldn’t have played anyone better in the final.”

To make things even more special, Williams said she would donate her $43K winning check to the Australia wildfire relief.

“I’ve been playing Australia for over 20 years and it’s been really hard for me to watch all the news and everything that’s been happening in Australia with all the fires and over a billion animals and people who have lost their homes,” Williams said. “So I decided that I would donate all my prize money for a great cause.”

U.S. President Donald Trump even tweeted to Williams, congratulating her on her big win. He tweeted,
