Woman Killed By Police After Calling 911 To Report Attempted Robbery In Home

In the wake of the Philando Castile verdict, a black woman from Seattle has been killed by police after reporting an attempted robbery in her home.

According to the Seattle Times, 30-year-old Charleena Lyles was shot and killed by police officers in her home at 10 a.m this morning. Lyles called 911 to report an attempted burglary in her home. Detectives say Lyles had a knife in her hand when the officers shot and killed her. Lyles lived in Magnuson Park.

Family members of Lyles are questioning why police had to shoot and kill her. They also believe that her race was a factor in the shooting. The Seattle Police Department wrote that “officers were confronted by a 30-year-old woman wielding a knife.”

“Both officers fired their duty weapons, striking the woman.”

Lyle’s children were reported to be in the home when the shooting happened. They are currently in the custody of family members. Lyles had two boys and a girl, ages 11, 4, and 1. Mayor Ed Murray released a statement about the tragic accident:

“My thoughts are with the many people impacted, including the children and the responding officers.”

Her sister, Monika Williams, said Lyle had mental health problems. It was also reported that Lyle’s youngest daughter has Down Syndrome and requires attention from Lyles, as the family tried to get her help.

Although Lyles was previously arrested for an altercation with her children’s father, her family still questions why she was killed.

“Why couldn’t they have Tased her? They could have taken her down. I could have taken her down.”

Facebook users have stated Lyles was three months pregnant when she was killed:

Twitter users are using the hashtag #sayhername, similar to the awareness of Sandra Bland and other black women being killed by the police:
