15-Year-Old Coco Gauff Defeats Idol Venus Williams At Wimbledon

15-year-old Cori “Coco” Gauff came with full force during her game against tennis star Venus Williams on Monday at Wimbledon. In a matchup of youth vs. experience, the youngest woman in the draw beat the five-time champion 6-4, 6-4, in a first-round meeting between two players with a 24-year age gap on Court 1.

Gauff is now the 12th youngest overall to play in the Wimbledon main draw since Laura Robson in 2009, but the youngest to come through qualifying.

“This is the first time I ever cried after winning a match,” Gauff told the BBC as she left the court. “I never thought this would happen. I don’t know how to explain it. I’m literally living my dream. Not many people get to say that.” She went on to say, “ I definitely had to tell myself to stay calm during the match. I never played on a court that’s so big. I had to remind myself that the lines are the same size as any other court.”

Williams reached her four of nine Wimbledon finals before her opponent was even born back in March 2004. Despite taking an L, Gauff revealed that her idol was happy for her.

“When we shook hands, she told me congratulations and to keep going and good luck. I said, ‘Thank you for everything you’ve done’ — I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her.”
