A Hawaii preschool is under investigation after they accidentally served their students Pine-Sol instead of apple juice.
According to the Miami Herald,a teacher assistant from the Kilohana Methodist Church Preschool believed that the cleaner was apple juice and served it to students on November 27. Health inspectors reported that the unidentified teacher assistant mistook the cleaner for the juice because it had a “similar color”.
The preschool director further elaborated how the teacher assistant found the Pine-Sol bottle in the kitchen on a cart while preparing the snacks for the students. She poured the cleaner into cups and served the liquid to the children.
Parents were immediately notified about the incident and the preschool was aware of the consequences by “scrutinizing the process of obtaining snacks and refreshments to rule out the smallest possibility of an occurrence like this from happening again.”
The children were reportedly not harmed by the cleaner and treated by paramedics. Medical officials stated that the children showed no visible signs of illness or distress.
“Only sips were taken before the lead teacher realized the liquid was not apple juice. The staff responded immediately by calling EMS and police. The children’s parents were immediately notified as well.”
Only crackers were served to students during the early morning mealtime and there was no food on the clean-up cart.
