A 73-year-old woman gave birth to twins in Guntur, India on Thursday. Doctors called it a medical miracle and she may be the oldest woman to give birth.
Insider reports Erramatti Mangayamma gave birth to the baby girls via a cesarian section in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Doctors made it possible for the woman to conceive through in vitro fertilization since she and her husband of 57 years were unable to conceive children naturally. Mangayamma told the India Times that she felt isolated from friends since she couldn’t have children.
“People looked at me with accusing eyes as if I had committed a sin. Neighbors would call me ‘godrulu'(meaning childless woman). However, my husband stood by me like a rock. “
Her husband said in a statement that he is looking forward to raising the girls with his wife.
“We are the happiest couple on earth today. We have our own children.”
The couple considered IVF after one of their neighbors used the procedure and gave birth at the age of 55. Medical consultants allowed Mangayamma to use IVF despite experiencing menopause at her age.
Dr. Sanakkayala Umasankar, the IVF specialist, said Mangayamma and the babies are in good health.
“This is a medical miracle.”
