Parker Williams felt that his teacher, Mary Hall Chambers wasn’t getting the money she deserved so he decided to give her the $15 he received as a birthday gift. With the money, Parker also gave her a note that said he didn’t think teachers are being paid enough ”so will you except this gift? My own money.”

Parker told WFLA he wanted to “do something nice” for the person who has “the most important job.” He went on to say, “I don’t think they get paid very much. And, so I think that I wanted to give my teacher a gift and share my ideas.”

Chambers initially reacted by giving him a hug but she not except the money. However, she did respond to his letter, saying, “I can’t accept this, but appreciate the gesture, Parker. Students like you are the reason I teach.”

The Daily Mail notes that the average starting teacher in Hillsborough County makes around $19 an hour. More experienced teachers make close to $25 an hour.
