Atatiana Jefferson’s Parents Speak Out On Her Death At The Hands Of Police: “I Don’t Want No Hug”

Heartbroken and left with many questions, that’s exactly how the parents of Atatiana Jefferson feels after their daughter was gunned down by police in her own apartment. As we previously reported, a neighbor had called the police to do a welfare check around 2:30 am on Saturday because her front door was left open. Police said the officer saw someone near a window inside the home and drew his duty weapon and fired after “perceiving a threat.”

However, her family’s attorney, S Lee Merritt, said the unnamed officer’s bodycam footage showed the cop “didn’t have time to perceive a threat. That’s murder” The parents of the black 28-year-old aspiring doctor are now speaking out for the first time on her death, calling it ”senseless.”

“My daughter was 28 years old, had her whole life in front of her,’ Father Marquis Jefferson told KTXA. “You have to know this is somebody’s daughter. Somebody loved her. There was a better way. It didn’t have to be like that.” The case is being compared to the fatal of the shooting of Botham Jean, who was killed by Amber Guyger – a white police officer who was off-duty – in his home just over a year ago. The family has forgiven the officer for the crime, however, this grieving dad said there won’t be any such sentimentality for him about the officer who killed his only daughter.

“Unlike this Botham Jean, I don’t want no hug,’ he said. ‘That’s my one and only daughter. I will never forget that.”

Atatiana’s stepmother, Noella Jefferson, said her stepdaughter had dreams and aspirations that she will unfortunately never be able to fulfill now.

“We have lost her for no reason,” Noella said of Atatiana who graduated with a pre-med degree from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2014.. “We have seen many cases like this where you think that they would have learned from it.”

The officer who pulled the trigger has been on the force since April 2018, according to Lt Brandon O’Neil. He shared that the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation and will be interviewed about the fatal shooting on Monday, The Daily Mail reports.

The officer’s name has yet to be released.
