A newborn baby was rescued after she was found buried alive in an Indian cemetery.
CNN reports that the baby was found on Oct. 10 by a couple who were burying their own child.
“When they began digging the ground, they immediately heard noises of crying,” Abhinandan Singh, the Superintendent of Police said. “As they dug up two or three feet of dirt, they found a baby girl who had been buried in an earthen pot.”
The couple said they heard crying and saw the baby girl and called the cemetery’s security guard. The baby was then taken to a hospital, where she was treated in the intensive care unit for respiratory problems and infections. She weighed just 3.3lbs.
Officials believe that the incident “seems to be a case of female infanticide,” when parents intentionally kill their newborn daughters.
Police are currently investigating to find her parents.
