An Italian artist has sold a banana duct-taped to a wall for $120,000 earlier this week at Art Basel Miami.
According to Newsweek, the artwork was created by Italian artist Mauricio Cattelan. Cattelan came up with the idea for the artwork titled “Comedian” earlier this year after being inspired to create a sculpture shaped like a banana.
“Every time he traveled, he brought a banana with him and hung it in his hotel room to find inspiration. He made several models: first in resin, then in bronze and in painted bronze, finally coming back to the initial idea of a real banana,”
The duct-taped banana was presented Wednesday at the French contemporary gallery Perrotin and sold for $120,000. Another edition of the artwork was sold for $150,000.The gallery’s founder, Emmanuel Perrotin, said he was shocked by the high demand of Cattelan’s latest work.
“It’s a miracle. I don’t know how this happened,”
