A Catholic priest who was leading a televised mass was stabbed multiple times on Friday morning.
The New York Post reports Rev.Claude Grou was finishing up the morning mass around 8:40 a.m. when a man approached him with a knife and stabbed him repeatedly at St.Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal. The stabbing was captured during a live broadcast on the Catholic channel Salt + Light. The video shows a man wearing a white baseball cap approaching Grou’s altar while he falls to the floor. Security and other church members approach the suspect as he stands next to the priest.
Grou gets up moments after the stabbing and did not look like he was in any pain. He was transported to a local hospital for minor wounds.
Police already arrested the suspect and he will be interviewed by investigators. Mayor Valerie Plante released a statement on Twitter in reference to the stabbing:
“I am relieved to learn that the life of Father Claude Grou, Rector of the [Oratory] is out of danger and that his condition is stable. On behalf of all Montrealers, I wish him speedy recovery.”
Grou is expected to make a full recovery but there were no further details about the suspect and his motives.
