According to multiple reports, one of the survivors of the 1999 Columbine shooting in Colorado, was found dead at his home early Saturday, according to Routt County, Colorado, Coroner Robert Ryg.
Austin Eubanks was found dead during a welfare check after he didn’t answer his phone. As of right now, no foul play is suspected, and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Eubanks was just 37 years old.
Eubanks was the victim who was shot in the hand and knee in the Columbine attack that killed 12 classmates and a teacher, including Eubanks’ best friend. Eubanks struggled with opioid addiction after the shooting and later changed his life around by becoming a public speaker discussing the issues of substance abuse in the country, according to his website.
His family released a statement saying that he “lost the battle with the very disease he fought so hard to help others face,” KMGH-TV reports.
The family added:
“We thank the recovery community for its support. As you can imagine, we are beyond shocked and saddened and request that our privacy is respected at this time.”
