Couple Sentenced To Six Years In Jail For Taking 88 Pounds Of Sand From Beach

A French couple will be facing up to six years in prison after taking 88 pounds of sand from a beach in Italy.

According to FOX 8 Cleveland, the couple removed the sand from a popular beach in Sardinia and officials reported the white sand is protected. The couple was arrested by Porto Torres police while waiting to board a ferry to Toulon, France. Authorities noticed multiple bottles of sand in the couple’s car and said in total weighed about 88 pounds and the pair said they did not know it was a crime to take sand from the beach.

The couple, a man and woman in their 40s, faced a judge in the city of Sassari. If convicted, they will pay a fine of €3,000 ($3,300) and faces up to a one to six years in prison for taking the coveted white sand.

A Sardinia officer said in a statement that it is common for tourists to take the white sand without knowing the consequences.

“The people of Sardinia are very angry with tourists that steal shells and sand, because it’s a theft (from) future generations that also puts at risk a delicate environment,”
