Cyntoia Brown Granted Full Clemency, Release Date Set For Aug. 7

Great news: The woman who was sentenced to life in prison at the age of 16 for killing a Nashville man who solicited her for sex, has just been granted full clemency by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam!

Haslam released a statement Monday morning explaining why he made such a big move for Cyntoia Brown. He said,

“This decision comes after careful consideration of what is a tragic and complex case,” Haslam said. “Cyntoia Brown committed, by her own admission, a horrific crime at the age of 16.  Yet, imposing a life sentence on a juvenile that would require her to serve at least 51 years before even being eligible for parole consideration is too harsh, especially in light of the extraordinary steps Ms. Brown has taken to rebuild her life.  Transformation should be accompanied by hope. So, I am commuting Ms. Brown’s sentence, subject to certain conditions.”

Those conditions require Brown not to break any federal or state laws and be subject to a release plan or other supervision conditions. Those could include work, education, employment, counseling, and other requirements.

This is a big moment for not only Brown but for those who followed her story. Just a month ago, the Tennessee Supreme Court was unanimous when it ruled against Brown saying she would have to serve at least 51 years of her prison sentence before she would be eligible for parole. Many people around the world including members of Nashville’s city council were outraged by the harsh punishment and had been pushing for her release ever since.

Ms. Brown’s case had also attracted widespread support from celebrities, including Rihanna and Kim Kardashian which helped pick up the pace as Governor Haslam, a Republican, finishes up his last few weeks in office. In December, supporters including Alyssa Milano, Ashley Judd and Amy Schumer also urged him to grant clemency to Ms. Brown.

It seems like everyone’s efforts, big or small helped. According to reports, she is set to be released to parole supervision on August 7, 2019.
