Cam Newton’s biggest sponsor has decided to part ways following his ‘sexist’ response to a female reporter during a press conference.
According to reports, Dannon Yogurt pulled their endorsement deal with the Carolina Panthers quarterback after comments he made after being asked a question by a female reporter.
If you recall, on Wednesday the Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton a routine question about the routes being run by Panthers wideout Devin Funchess.
Newton was surprised by her question and laughed and replied, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.’ Newton then takes a pause before repeating ‘it’s funny.
After his response went viral, social media began accusing Newton of being sexist and condescending. Rodrigue even took to her social media to express her disappointment.
After the comments, Dannon released a statement expressing their disappointment.
“‘We are shocked and disheartened at the behavior and comments of Cam Newton towards Jourdan Rodrigue, which we perceive as sexist and disparaging to all women,’ read the Dannon spokesman’s statement. ‘It is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to fostering equality and inclusion in every workplace. It’s simply not ok to belittle anyone based on gender.”
However, according to Newton’s marketing agent, Carlos Fleming, who spoke to ESPN, says Dannon has not completely cut ties with the quarterback. The company plans on keeping Newton under contract but will not use his face in future advertisements.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera responded.
“Cam made a mistake,’ Rivera said. ‘I understand he had a conversation where he pretty much said he shouldn’t have said what he said. As far as I’m concerned, what I’d like to do is talk about getting ready for the Detroit Lions.”
What are your thoughts socialites? Are people overreacting to his response?
