A Flager County detention deputy has been forced to resign after being investigated for allegedly using excessive force on a white inmate.

In surveillance footage from the incident deputy Jarred Tazewell is attacked by the inmate, who throws a walker at him. He then punches the man with a closed fist, causing him to fall.

The inmate who was identified as Mark Duncanson, 54, who was released from custody six days after the incident.

Following an internal investigation, officials determined that Tazewell violated agency policies by using excessive force. Tazewell then resigned from the Sheriff’s Office.

“Excessive use of force will not be tolerated at the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “During the investigation, investigators determined the inmate’s behavior did not warrant the level and type of the force used by the detention deputy. He resigned in lieu of being terminated, which was the likely outcome of the investigation.“

The state attorney’s office has declined to file charges against Tazewell in relation to the incident.
