DNA Tests To Prove Whether Fertility Doctor Secretly Fathered 200 Children
22 people have won the right to have their DNA tested against a fertility clinic doctor who is feared to have secretly fathered 200 children by using his own sperm.
The doctor in question, Jan Karbaat, who passed away in April 2017 aged 89, vehemently denied the accusations and refused to take a DNA test. However, the courts have ruled against him because they believe that there is enough evidence to suggest that Karbaat used his own sperm.
Since a different hearing in 2017, significant DNA links between a legal child of Karbaat and those conceived with his clinic’ have surfaced.
The court recently ruled that those who want to know if they are related to the doctor outweighed the interests of Karbaat’s widow and heirs.
“If he did use his own sperm, without announcing it at the time, his widow and other heirs cannot claim that the doctor’s anonymity should be respected,” the judge said.
As of now, he could have fathered at least 200 children and Clinical tests in 2017 showed a high level of certainty about the paternity of at least 47of those children.
The Doctor’s clinic was also shut down in 2009 after huge administrative irregularities were discovered. He also allegedly fabricated documents and date in relation to donors.
