Donald Trump Says He Will Declare National Emergency If Congress Doesn’t Fund Wall
Trump has now announced that he will declare a national emergency if Democrats don’t agree to his demands for his $5.7 billion border wall.
The Huffington Post reports that Trump made the threat on Thursday, on the 20th day of the government shutdown after a reporter asked Trump if his “only option left” was to declare a national emergency, he said it would be “the easy route.”
“I have the absolute right to declare a national emergency, the lawyers have so advised me,” he said outside the White House. “I’m not prepared to do that yet, but if I have to, I will. I have no doubt about it. I will.”
“But the easy route for me would be to call a national emergency and do it,” Trump added.
Trump also claimed that he never said Mexico would pay for the wall, despite making remarks earlier in his administration that they would be responsible.
“When during the campaign I would say Mexico is going to pay for [the wall], obviously I never said this, and I never meant they’re going to write out a check. I said they’re going to pay for it. They are. They are paying with the incredible deal we made called the USMCA.”
TRUMP: “I don’t think we have ever seen unity like this in the Republican Party. The media, which I call the opposition party, in coordination with the Democrats, they are not talking about the Democrats folding… I don’t think there will be any break away [among Republicans].” pic.twitter.com/x8thr8VsEl
