Many reported having trouble logging in, posting and scrolling through their timelines. So what really happened? Well, Facebook hasn’t given an exact reason for the outage, but they did acknowledge that they are aware their services along with the ones they own, are down in some areas.

In a tweet posted this afternoon, Facebook said,

“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

They also confirmed that the problem was not the result of a “DDoS attack,” which refers to a Distributed Denial-of-Service attack in which a hacker overwhelms a site by flooding it with fake traffic, according to CNBC.

The result of the outage now leaves millions partially disconnected. Downdetector.com, which monitors websites, specifically noted that the company is experiencing issues across a large portion of the U.S., Europe, and parts of South America, Asia, and Australia.
