A Dutch family is now free after living in a hidden basement for over a decade with a man who’s since been arrested!
Six siblings and a 58-year-old man have been discovered in a hidden basement in the Netherlands having been down there for nearly a decade allegedly in preparation for the world to end.
This discovery was made on Sunday after one of the siblings had escaped the farmhouse basement and went to a local bar. The bar owner, Chris Westerbeek, struck up a conversation with the man who told him what had happened.
He shared that his sibling’s ages 18-25 were all in the home with the man who had no relationship with them. They were in the basement of the home waiting for “the end of time” with no contact to the outside world. In fact, they lived off of a home garden and farm animals.
“I had a chat with him and he revealed he had run away and needed help… then we called the police,” Westerbeek said, according to the outlet. “He had long hair, a dirty beard, wore old clothes and looked confused. He said he’d never been to school and hadn’t been to the barber for nine years.”
When authorities arrived at the home, they found a staircase behind a cupboard leading them to where the family and the man had been living. They say that the man had been in the bed and had appeared to have suffered from a stroke years ago. The siblings reportedly had no idea that there were other people living in the world.
As for any neighbors int the area, they say that the had no idea about the siblings believing that the man was the only person living there.
The 58-year-old man was arrested for not wanting to cooperate with investigators but there is no word on what charges he has received.
Authorities are looking into the family and why they were living underground for so long. They are also investigating if they had been held against their will.
“Part of our investigation is to find out what the people in that house were doing exactly,” police spokesperson Nathalie Schubart told The Guardian. “There are still many questions to which we have no answers. The investigation is still going on.”
