Two Tennesee mothers were at a local nightclub while their children were harmed in an apartment fire in Antioch.
The New York Daily News reports that the mothers of the children, ages 23 and 25, told Metro Nashville Police that a babysitter was in the home at the time of the fire. However, police reported there was no babysitter present when they investigated the scene.
8-month-old Jream Jenkins died in the fire and her 23-month-old brother remains in critical condition. Four other children, two girls and two boys, aged 6,4,2 and 1, were injured in the fire. The five surviving children are currently being treated at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital in Nashville.
Authorities immediately rushed to the Hickory Lake Apartments after witnesses called 911 and reported seeing the six-year-old victim running out of the burning apartment. When firefighters arrived at the home, neighbors told them that several children were in the apartment. Jream was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fire did not spread to the other apartment units but some of them sustained smoke damage.
