A former Miami assistant principal is arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly killed a teacher whose body was found inside of a canal last month.
Local 10 News reports 39-year-old Ernest Joseph Roberts was arrested early Friday morning for the murder of teacher and friend Kameela Russell. Authorities reported that Roberts was a former assistant principal at Miami Norland Senior High School and Russell was recently assigned as a test proctor at the school. The mother of two was last seen on May 15 in her black Audi A6 on the driveway of her aunt’s home which was a few blocks away from Roberts. After her body was found in a canal near Roberts’ home on May 25, police ruled her death a homicide.
Before her murder, Roberts posted on social media about his 20-year friendship with Russell and wanted information about her disappearance:
“Kameela was more than my sister. For 20 years she’s been at my side. Both our families and close friends know the bond that we’ve had. If you know her, you know her spirit. The life of the party. Always there to lean on. The pain can’t be put into words. It’s almost too heavy to handle. Rumors are dangerous. Anyone with facts please reach out. We lost a beautiful mind and a great spirit.”
Additional details revealed that Roberts’ arrived at the Linda Lentin K-8 Center on May 20 before a school trip and searched for a handwritten note with a set of keys belonging to an Audi A6. The note wanted its reader to destroy the vehicle and to throw the note away once the deed was done.
“Do you know anyone that can chop up a car? If so or make it ‘disappear’ take these keys. It’s behind the Speedway Racetrack on 441 by County Line. Friends are gone and need it to disappear. If not leave it and I’ll work it out later. Throw this note away!”
An employee who opened the classroom for Roberts contacted the police and informed them that he had called them the night before and told them that he “did something crazy.” Roberts also used an alibi where he allegedly killed a “home intruder” and described how he got rid of the body. The employee added that he thought Roberts was joking about the matter.
A statement in reference to the murder was released by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools:
“Miami-Dade County Public Schools is appalled and saddened after learning of today’s arrest in connection to the death of Kameela Russell,” the statement read. “Miami-Dade Schools Police has provided any and all assistance requested by the Miami Gardens Police Department in their investigation.
