GOP Delegate Compares LGBTQ Community To Ku Klux Klan
West Virginia lawmaker Eric Porterfield is facing backlash and being pushed to resign after comparing the LGBTQ community to the Ku Klux Klan and claiming that he would “see if his kids can swim” if they were gay.
“The LGBTQ is a modern-day version of the Ku Klux Klan, without wearing hoods with their antics of hate,” Porterfield told the Charleston Gazette-Mail.
He also is reported to have said f***** during a meeting that week. In addition, he claims he has been receiving threats since the incident.
“The LGBT is the most socialist group in this country,” he added. “They do not protect gays. There are many gays they persecute if they do not line up with their social ideology.”
Following his homophobic remarks, the West Virginia Democratic Party has called for Porterfield’s resignation.
“West Virginia has no room for someone who expresses such hate. Let alone room for him to hold a public office where he is supposed to represent the people of West Virginia,” WVDP Chairwoman Belinda Biafore said.
“His hate-filled remarks and actions speak volumes and so does the Republican Party’s silence. The Republican majority’s leadership needs to condemn these actions. Their silence is complicit and the people of West Virginia deserve better,” she added.
It is not clear when his resignation will be in process.
What would Del. Porterfield do if his son thinks he’s gay or if his daughter thinks she’s a lesbian? He would “see if they can swim.” It’s disturbing how quickly the WVVA reporter moves on. pic.twitter.com/ESb3EswfZz
