A Pennsylvania groom was charged with rape after he allegedly sexually assaulted his then fiancée’s bridesmaid a few days before the wedding.
Buzzfeed News reports Daniel J.Carney of Stroudsburg was charged on Thursday for one felony count of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with an unconscious individual, a misdemeanor count of simple assault, and another misdemeanor for indecent assault. The sexual assault occurred on Aug.30 where the 29-year-old victim and others from the wedding party were out drinking and rafting. She explained to police that she was intoxicated and went out of consciousness then woke up to Carney on top of her in a locker room shower at Shawnee Inn.
Carney’s then-fiancée walked into the locker room and yelled at him while another bridesmaid escorted the victim out of the room. Police reported that the couple had an argument in the hotel’s parking lot later that evening but decided to continue with the wedding on Sept. 1.
The groom claimed that the victim followed him into the locker room and told police during an interview he felt like he was “taken advantage of by the victim.” However, he changed his story and said he dragged the woman into the room. Surveillance footage showed Carney walking with the victim before he pulled her into the room.
