Melina Matsoukas and Lena Waithe have teamed up to produce “Queen & Slim” and Hollywood Unlocked was on the carpet for the world premiere!
It’s a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde story as Melina Matsoukas and Lena Waithe take fans on an emotional rollercoaster that needs to be heard.
This film follows the story of a black couple, Daniel Kaluuya who plays Slim and in her breakout role Jodie Turner-Smith who plays Queen as they are on the run for their lives following a fatal situation with a white police officer.
While on the carpet, we spoke with Waithe about the rise that black Hollywood and her role in it all!
“It’s a very black movie with black people in it and it’s coming from a black lense,” she said.
“Queen & Slim” opened the 2019 American Film Institue festival which left Waithe giving it nothing but praises.
“For us to be opning this night almost says to us that we belong in that library of films and ciminas , thats what tonight represents to me it greatness annd black xcelends and thats a beautiful thing!”
The movie handles serious topics, but many say that this movie will also capture the essence of love as viewers see the evolution of Queen and Slim’s relationship while on the run!
“This story can only happen now and i find it really exciting, it speeks to the disposal and nature of love nowdays,” Kaluuuya said.
“Its an emptionaly heavey piece of work, we were both carying it,” he conitnued. “There were a load of sccences that were just on us!”
This world premiere drew out a star-studded list of celebrities like Rihanna, Tina Knowles, Snoop Dogg, Zendaya, 2 Chainz, Natalie Portman, Janelle Monáe, Evan Ross, Tracee Ellis Ross, Asante Black, Kelly Rowland and so many more!
