HU Exclusive: Giving You The Keys To The 2017 ‘Black Girls Rock’ Red Carpet

The annual “Black Girls Rock” event taped on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Prudential Hall in Newark, NJ. Hollywood Unlocked was there to celebrate another year of black girl magic and black excellence.

We caught up with some of the celebrities who graced the red carpet, including Maxwell, Eva Marcille, Keyshia Ka’oir, and many more, who also shared what the special night meant to them.

This year, the three-time NAACP Award-winning “Black Girls Rock” Awards was hosted by Taraji P Henson. The Empire star was joined by performers like SZA, Ledisi, Anthony Hamilton and Tasha Cobb, and plenty of other artists.

The night became even more special with this year’s special selection of honorees, such as “Insecure” producer, writer, and actress Issa Rae, activist Yara Shahidi, Roberta Flack, California congresswoman Maxine Waters, and singer Solange Knowles, just to name a few.

Each guest speaker delivered moving words of wisdom. Maxine Waters, who became a viral sensation on social media for her video where she insisted that she was “reclaiming my time” at a recent congressional hearing, made it clear that she is not be played with.

“I don’t care how big you are, I don’t care how high you are, if you come for me, I’m coming for you,” Waters added, earning more loud applause, Page Six quotes.
