According to The New York Daily News, 36-year-old Laura Hurst was found Wednesday night with an 8 feet long python wrapped around her neck. The person who first found her was able to unwrap the python but was unable to revive her.

Lafayette, Sgt. Kim Riley, an Indiana State Police spokesman, said her cause of death would be determined during an autopsy, scheduled for Friday.

“She appears to have been strangled by the snake,” Riley said. “We do not know that for a fact until after the autopsy.”

Indiana State Police told the Daily News the home her home had been renovated specifically to house snakes. There were about 140 snakes living there, police said, and 20 of them belonged to Hurst.

Despite that, it was noted that the reptiles were caged or otherwise secured inside the building, Riley said.

The Journal & Courier reported that property records show the home is actually owned by Benton County Sheriff Don Munson, who lives next door. Apparently, he told the newspaper that he was the one who found Hurst.

He called her death a “tragic accident with loss of human life” and added that, “I’ve given all information to the state police.” He also said that he was “being fully cooperative with everybody.”
