Iranian Woman Sets Herself On Fire After Learning She Could Be Jailed For Sneaking Into Soccer Stadium
An Iranian woman who was arrested for dressing up as a man to sneak into a soccer stadium has passed away after setting herself on fire. She did this upon learning that she could spend six months in prison.
29-year-old Sahar Khodayari died after she covered herself in gasoline in front of Tehran’s courthouse. She had burns over 90% of her body.
Her actions came after she learned that she could be jailed for trying to watch the soccer game. Back in March, Khodayari attempted to sneak into Tehran’s Azadi Stadium to watch her favorite team, Esteghlal, against the United Arab Emirates team Al Ain. She dressed as a man by wearing a blue wig and a long overcoat, which gave her the nickname the “Blue Girl.” However, she was arrested.
Women in Iran are banned from watching soccer games.
Masoud Shojaei, captain of the Iran national football side, said, “As we are shocked by old limitations set for women, the future generations will be astonished to [find out] that women were banned from entering sports arenas in our time.”
“The origin of such limitations is the rotten and disgusting thinking of the past, and will be incomprehensible for the next generation.”
FIFA has been working heavily with Iranian authorities to get rid of the ban on women which has been in place since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. They want it resolved before the upcoming World Cup.
