Justine Skye Collaborates With H&M After “Monkey” Sweatshirt Controversy

Following H&M’s major controversies earlier this year, the fashion giant is looking forward to collaborate with singer Justine Skye.

H&M has disappointed fans a lot over the past two years as they seem to be dropping the ball on their product campaigns, but the latest campaign with Justine is sure to be a hit.

If you recall, back in 2018, the Swedish fashion retailer released an ad with a black boy wearing a shirt that said “coolest monkey in the jungle.” That was met with major concerns prompting diversity training throughout the company!

Things may have seemed to be getting better, but in September, they were met with another controversial ad as their campaign featured kids with messy hair. In the campaign, there was one black girl who’s hair was “messier” than the others which caused major conversations about black hair.

Now, it seels like they are doing some damage control as they are set to collab with singer Justine Skye.

In an interview with  Popsugar, Sky talked about what fans could expect from her 17-piece collection.

“I wanted to make pieces that people felt comfortable in but would still look cute in. I just incorporated pieces that I enjoy in my own personal closet, and made it my own,” she said

Given her idea of comfort, Skye’s collection will features pieces like sweatsuits, miniskirts, bandanas, a chain-link belt, and more.

She also shared that her collection takes inspiration from Princess Diana, and her personal Jamaican roots.

When talking about one of her favorite items, the sweatsuit, she said;

“I wanted to make it something that was casual but fashionable, so we extended the neck. I took inspiration from Princess Diana when she was in her athleisure, and that drew me to make my own version of what that sweater was.”

With so many pieces and a variety of options, Skye says that each piece can be worn in various ways.

” We created these pieces so that they can be incorporated into an outfit in many ways,” she said. “You don’t have to use the chain belt as just a belt, you can put it on the purse. You don’t have to use the cloud bandana as just the bandana, you can use it as a hair tie, you can wrap it around your bun. I encourage people to try new things.”

The collection officially drops on Nov. 22 at H&M.
