Kamala Harris Is Running For President In 2020!

Kamala Harris, the junior U.S. Senator for the state of California since 2017, announced her move into the presidential race on Monday! She shared the big news while appearing ABC’s “Good Morning America” and through a campaign video which explains that she is coming for the presidential seat and is aiming to become the nation’s first woman to win the White House and the second black commander in chief!

“I’m running for president of the United States and I’m very excited about it,” she said during an appearance on GMA, timing her announcement with Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a nod to the civil rights movement. “I’m honored to be able to make my announcement on the day that we commemorate [Dr.King,]”

She added,

“The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values. That’s why I’m running for President of the United States,” Harris says in a campaign video released on social media.

Harris would be the first African American woman to be a major party nominee for the presidency if she ultimately secures the Democratic nomination spot. With her announcement, she joins trailblazers including Shirley Chisholm and Carol Moseley Braun, two African American women who have previously fought for the Democratic ticket.

If all goes in her favor, it will be the second time making history. Before joining the Senate, Harris became California’s first female and first African-American attorney general in 2010. Before that, she served two terms as the district attorney for San Francisco.
