Kendrick Lamar Under Fire For Campaigning Against #MuteRKelly Efforts
It seems like Kendrick Lamar is the latest celebrity to be dragged into the Surviving R. Kelly storm; this as BuzzFeed‘s Saeed Jones reminds folks about Lamar’s actions last year during the #MuteRKelly movement.
Additionally, over this past weekend, Jones tweeted, “I keep thinking about Kendrick Lamar actively campaigning (and succeeding) in getting R. Kelly and XXXTentacles put back on Spotify last year in response to the #MuteRKelly movement. There is complicit silence (shout out to Questlove) and then there is active endorsement.”
Furthermore, for those unaware, Spotify attempted to comply with the movement in removing XXXTentacion and R. Kelly‘s music of its platform completely, showing their support of protesters against domestic violence and sexual abuse.
While it is unknown if Kendrick knew the reason behind the platform’s actions, he campaigned against it; and threatened to pull his own catalog from the streaming service.
So, they back down in removing the musicians’ music.
May 2018: "Spotify recently rolled out a new hate content policy. R. Kelly and XXXTentacion were the first two artists affected by the policy, though at the urging of Kendrick Lamar, Spotify is already amending its stance.” https://t.co/ysJ8WInjsR
