Kim Kardashian West recently opened up about why she is fiercely fighting for justice for convicted drug felon Alice Marie Johnson.
While her husband Kanye West continues to receive backlash for his recent comments on slavery being a “choice”, the 37-year-old reality star and beauty mogul is at the center of a major push for criminal justice reform for a 62-year-old great-grandmother who is serving a life sentence for drug conspiracy and money laundering.
The KUWTK star is in close contact with the White House in hopes of getting Johnson exonerated. In an exclusive interview with Mic, the mother of three explained why she got involved with the case and what the status of her work is right now.
“I’ve been in communication with the White House and trying to bring her case to the president’s desk and figure out how we can get her out,” Kardashian West tells Mic.
“That’s such a huge step from where we started with that not even being on their radar.”
Kardashian West shared that she’s been working with Jared Kushner and the Trump administration for months in hopes of getting Johnson freed. She revealed that after watching a video profile Mic did on Johnson in 2017, Kim felt moved and immediately took action by hiring her personal legal team to represent the incarcerated woman.
The 62-year-old felon was sentenced to life in prison without parole after she became involved with cocaine dealers following her son’s murder, a divorce, being terminated from her job, and losing her home to foreclosure.
According to Mic, Johnson says she never sold drugs or made deals herself, but did admit to acting as a middleman for those involved where she would pass along messages.
“If you think about a decision that you’ve made in your life and you get life without the possibility of parole for your first-time nonviolent offense, there’s just something so wrong with that,” she said.
The superstar explained how her life has changed and how she wants to use her power to help make the world a better place.
“Where I’m at in my life right now, just like, to go and spend my money buying material things just doesn’t satisfy me the way that it used to,” she said.
“To save someone’s life and do that once a year, then that would make [my] heart fuller.”
